Greetings I am Guray, I am a web developer and Local Seo expert. Today we will talk about how a small business should start doing search engine optimization.

Start With Happy Customers

Before anything else, small businesses need to focus on making their customers happy. Get the business side right first — then worry about marketing. Because if you don’t have a good product, trying to market it will just exhaust you. You can’t run a mill with water that’s passed by, as they say. I’ve seen this play out countless times.

That said, I’m assuming you’ve already handled that part — people are happy, they want to come back, but your volume just isn’t there yet. That’s when you need SEO and marketing.

If people aren’t already telling “this product/service is amazing,” focus on improving the product first. Don’t scale prematurely.

Where to Begin: Review Marketing

If you’re ready to market, start with review marketing — especially as a small business.

Get listed on Google Maps, Yandex, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and whatever platforms are popular in your area.

Don’t buy fake reviews. They’re useless. Even with real reviews, people are skeptical — I have a client with 780 genuine reviews with 4.9 star average and tourists still approach them with doubt. Trust is genuinely hard to build online right now – as before -, so people might not buy everything with confidence the way you expect — even in an era of same-day delivery.

What actually works: customers who genuinely say “I am happy with this product / service” — people who post their own photos, write their own words. Not your friends. Real customers. That slowly but surely makes people wonder, “what’s going on here?”

The Four Pillars of Small Business SEO

1. Review Marketing

Already covered above. Connect your review profiles to your website — embed them, link to them. This also gets you backlinks from major review platforms, which are essentially references pointing back to your site.

2. Backlinks

Backlinks are references from other websites to yours — similar to academic citations. The more quality references you have, the better.

The two best free ways to get backlinks as a small business:

  • Reach out to bloggers and review sites that cover your type of service. I find them, contact them personally, thank them, and ask to get a link added to their content.
  • Get listed in business directories relevant to your area or industry.

Don’t do spam link-building. It stopped working long ago. You might open Search Console and see 50 new backlinks — then a month later they’re all gone, either deleted or removed by Google. It’s 2026; any shortcut gets detected quickly. Don’t waste your time.

3. Content Marketing

This is the cornerstone of SEO in the AI era. You need to produce original, human-driven content.

Write about your area of expertise. Answer every question a customer might have — genuinely and originally. You know your field; agencies don’t. When an agency writes about landscaping, they Google other landscaping sites and copy the same generic content everyone else has. That’s why most sites look identical and tell you nothing.

A real example: We did interviews with performers for an event ticketing client — ages, relationships, behind-the-scenes info. It resonated because people were curious, it was original, and it outranked much larger sites for those topics.

You don’t have to be a writer. Record a voice memo, clean it up with AI — but make sure the original thinking and expertise comes from you. AI is a formatting tool, not a replacement for your knowledge.

Also: be consistent. One month of content won’t carry you for a year. Regular publishing is what compounds over time.

4. Technical SEO

This includes:

  • Hosting: Don’t use cheap shared hosting carelessly. Some providers have security issues that actively hurt your rankings. Consider a VPS for long-term reliability.
  • Site platform: For most small businesses, WordPress or Wix works well. Wix’s built-in tools have genuinely improved — if you have a basic understanding, try setting it up yourself.
  • Site speed and crawlability: How fast pages load, how easily bots can read your content.
  • Internal linking: How pages on your own site connect to each other, and which anchor text you use. This matters more than people realize.

Don’t obsess over keyword stuffing. Search engines have always said not to do it, and now we’re finally at the point where it truly doesn’t work. Produce helpful, trustworthy content — that’s the job.

On Social Media

Social media traffic does matter for SEO. Fill out your profiles and keep them active. Once you have a site, you can automate cross-posting to other platforms fairly easily — WordPress and Wix both have tools for this built in. I no longer recommend paying for separate dashboard tools for small businesses; it’s not worth it.

A Note on AI and SEO

AI search has shifted things — but mostly at the margins. The big players (major newspapers, established authority sites) still dominate. What AI has done is open a small but real window for small businesses: when someone asks an AI assistant “what comedy events are near me” or “what should I eat nearby,” the AI cites sources. It rewards whoever provides the most useful content on that topic. That’s a real opportunity, and content marketing is how you take it.

Summary

The system has four legs:

  1. Review marketing — get real reviews on real platforms
  2. Backlinks — directories and genuine outreach, no spam
  3. Content marketing — original, consistent, expert-level writing
  4. Technical SEO — good hosting, fast site, clean internal structure

If you have a genuinely good product and people are already telling you so — invest in getting found. The timing is actually good right now. People search “near me” constantly, and that traffic converts. You just need to show up.
